02
Professional ConductEveryone working on behalf of the company is expected to behave responsibly on site, in customer homes and during business activity.
03

Introduction

This alcohol and drugs policy sets out the approach taken by TRM Innovations Ltd towards alcohol misuse, illegal drug use, substance misuse and any impairment that may affect safety, conduct or workmanship.

TRM Innovations Ltd is a Bexleyheath-based building company providing services that may include extensions, refurbishments, kitchens, bathrooms, garage conversions, garden rooms, loft conversions and general building work.

Because building work can involve tools, vehicles, ladders, machinery, electrical work, manual handling, occupied homes and shared working areas, it is essential that everyone involved is fit to work safely and responsibly.

Purpose of This Policy

The purpose of this policy is to help protect customers, workers, subcontractors, visitors, suppliers and members of the public from risks linked to alcohol or drug misuse.

The policy is also intended to make clear that working while impaired is not acceptable. Impairment can affect judgement, balance, concentration, coordination, reaction time, communication and decision-making.

TRM Innovations Ltd expects anyone working for or on behalf of the company to arrive fit for work, remain fit for work throughout the working day and avoid conduct that may place themselves or others at risk.

Scope of This Policy

This policy applies to anyone working for or on behalf of TRM Innovations Ltd. This may include directors, employees, workers, subcontractors, labourers, suppliers, consultants, agency workers and any other person carrying out work connected to the company.

It applies while working on customer properties, travelling for work, operating vehicles or equipment, attending meetings, visiting suppliers, communicating with customers or representing the company in any business-related setting.

The policy applies during normal working hours and at any other time where alcohol or drug use could affect work, safety, conduct or the reputation of TRM Innovations Ltd.

Our Position on Alcohol and Drugs

TRM Innovations Ltd does not permit anyone to work while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or any substance that could make them unfit or unsafe to carry out their duties.

Alcohol or drug misuse is not acceptable on site, in customer homes, in company vehicles, while using tools or equipment, or while carrying out any work-related activity.

This policy applies whether impairment has been caused by alcohol, illegal drugs, misused prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, solvents, controlled substances or any other substance that affects safe working.

Alcohol at Work

Alcohol must not be consumed during working time, on active sites, in customer homes, while driving for work or while carrying out duties on behalf of TRM Innovations Ltd.

A person may still be affected by alcohol consumed outside working hours. Anyone who is impaired, hungover to the point of being unsafe, or not fit to carry out their work properly should not start work.

Where alcohol is involved in a business or social setting, individuals are still expected to act responsibly and make sure their behaviour does not affect safety, judgement, professionalism or the reputation of the company.

Illegal Drugs and Controlled Substances

The use, possession, supply or distribution of illegal drugs is not permitted during work or on any site connected to TRM Innovations Ltd.

No person may attend work under the influence of illegal drugs or controlled substances that have not been lawfully prescribed.

Any suspected possession, supply or use of illegal drugs during work may be treated seriously and may lead to removal from site, termination of the working relationship or referral to relevant authorities where appropriate.

Prescription and Over-the-Counter Medication

Some prescribed or over-the-counter medicines can affect alertness, coordination, concentration, balance or the ability to drive, use tools or work safely.

Anyone taking medication that may affect their ability to work safely should check the label, follow medical advice and inform the appropriate person before starting work if there may be a safety risk.

TRM Innovations Ltd does not require unnecessary personal medical details, but safety risks must be managed properly. Adjustments, temporary restrictions or alternative arrangements may be needed where medication could affect safe working.

Fitness for Work

Everyone working for or on behalf of TRM Innovations Ltd must be fit to work before starting their duties.

Being fit to work means being able to carry out tasks safely, follow instructions, use tools properly, communicate clearly and make sensible decisions.

If someone believes they are not fit to work because of alcohol, drugs, medication, fatigue, illness or any other reason, they should report this before beginning work.

Construction and Site Safety Risks

Alcohol and drug misuse can be especially dangerous in building and refurbishment work because tasks may involve cutting tools, lifting, electrical services, working at height, dust, noise, confined spaces, temporary access, deliveries and heavy materials.

A single unsafe decision can put workers, customers, neighbours and members of the public at risk.

For this reason, TRM Innovations Ltd expects a cautious approach. If there is reasonable concern that someone may be impaired, the priority will be to protect safety first.

Customer Homes and Occupied Properties

Many TRM Innovations Ltd projects take place in or around occupied homes. This means workers may be close to families, personal belongings, pets, neighbours and everyday household activity.

Anyone representing the company must behave professionally and respectfully. Alcohol or drug-related behaviour that causes concern, discomfort, disruption, damage or safety risk is not acceptable.

Customers should be able to expect responsible conduct from anyone attending their property on behalf of TRM Innovations Ltd.

Driving and Work Vehicles

No person should drive for work if they are under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, misused medication or any substance that may affect their ability to drive safely.

This applies to company vehicles, personal vehicles used for work, deliveries, supplier visits, site travel and any journey connected to company business.

Drivers are responsible for making sure they are legally and safely able to drive. If there is any doubt, they should not drive.

Tools, Equipment and Machinery

No person should use tools, equipment, ladders, machinery or electrical equipment if they are impaired by alcohol, drugs, medication or any other substance.

This includes hand tools, power tools, access equipment, lifting equipment, cutting tools and any equipment that requires concentration, coordination or safe handling.

If impairment is suspected, the person may be instructed to stop work immediately while the situation is reviewed.

Reporting Concerns

Anyone who has a concern about alcohol or drug misuse should report it as soon as possible.

Concerns may include a person appearing impaired, smelling of alcohol, behaving unusually, struggling to follow instructions, taking unnecessary risks, using drugs, possessing drugs, drinking during work or creating a safety concern.

Reports should be made in a responsible and factual way. The aim is to prevent harm, not to make assumptions without reason.

Reasonable Suspicion

If there is reasonable suspicion that someone is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, TRM Innovations Ltd may take immediate steps to protect safety.

This may include asking the person to stop work, leave the working area, avoid driving, hand over tools, move away from risk or wait while the matter is reviewed.

Reasonable suspicion may be based on behaviour, appearance, smell, speech, coordination, unsafe actions, witness reports or other relevant circumstances.

Searches and Testing

TRM Innovations Ltd may consider alcohol or drug testing where this is appropriate, lawful, proportionate and relevant to the work being carried out.

Testing may be considered following an incident, near miss, safety concern or reasonable suspicion of impairment. Any testing process should be handled fairly and with regard to privacy and legal requirements.

Where a client, principal contractor or site operator has its own alcohol and drug testing requirements, those requirements may also apply to workers attending that site.

Refusal to Cooperate

If a person refuses to cooperate with reasonable steps taken to manage a safety concern, this may be treated seriously.

Refusal may include failing to leave a work area when asked, refusing a lawful and reasonable instruction, attempting to drive while suspected of impairment or refusing to engage with a reasonable investigation.

The immediate priority will always be to reduce risk and protect people, property and the working environment.

Support and Disclosure

TRM Innovations Ltd recognises that alcohol or drug dependency can be a serious issue. Anyone who believes they may have a problem should seek help as early as possible.

Where a person voluntarily raises a concern before it creates a safety issue or misconduct matter, the company may consider appropriate support, guidance or reasonable steps depending on the circumstances.

However, support does not remove the need to maintain safe working standards. Working while impaired or placing others at risk may still be treated seriously.

Confidentiality

Information about alcohol, drugs, medication or health-related matters will be handled with care and only shared where there is a legitimate need to manage safety, legal obligations, work arrangements or business responsibilities.

Confidentiality may not be absolute where there is a serious safety risk, legal requirement or need to protect others from harm.

Disciplinary or Contractual Action

Breaching this policy may lead to appropriate action. This may include removal from site, suspension of duties, ending a subcontractor relationship, disciplinary action, reporting to a site manager or notifying relevant authorities where necessary.

The action taken will depend on the circumstances, including the seriousness of the issue, the risk created, the role involved and whether the matter relates to misconduct, safety or dependency.

Examples of serious breaches may include working while impaired, drinking on site, using illegal drugs at work, supplying drugs, driving under the influence or refusing to follow safety instructions.

Subcontractors and Third Parties

Subcontractors and third parties working with TRM Innovations Ltd are expected to follow this policy and any site-specific alcohol and drug rules that apply.

Where a subcontractor is suspected of breaching this policy, they may be asked to stop work or leave the site while the matter is reviewed.

TRM Innovations Ltd may stop using any subcontractor or third party whose conduct creates unacceptable risk.

Training and Awareness

TRM Innovations Ltd aims to maintain awareness of the risks linked to alcohol and drug misuse in construction and home improvement work.

Workers and subcontractors should understand the importance of being fit for work, reporting concerns and avoiding any behaviour that may affect safety or professionalism.

Policy Review

This alcohol and drugs policy may be reviewed and updated from time to time to reflect changes in working practices, legal requirements, site requirements or company procedures.

Any updates will be published on this page.
